Creamy and Crunchy Cheesy Carrot Roll Filled with Ham
We always keep an eye on the latest culinary trends circulating online, as we love discovering new ideas and experimenting in the kitchen. When we came across this vegetable-based roll on social media, it immediately piqued our interest: does it really work, or does it just look good in the videos? We didn’t hesitate much, took the basic idea, and adapted the recipe to our taste.
The result exceeded all our expectations: this cheesy carrot roll is pleasantly baked on the outside and juicy on the inside, with the combination of silky cream cheese, sweet tomatoes, and smoked ham being incredibly delicious. Moreover, this gluten-free roll is a guilt-free alternative to bread, perfect for a light breakfast or a quick snack.
Carrot Omelet Roll Variations and Chef Tips:
This cheesy carrot roll is a brilliant base that you can confidently adapt according to the contents of your fridge and your personal preferences:
- Mediterranean Twist: Mix a bit of crushed garlic or green pesto into the cream cheese, and instead of plain tomatoes, add strips of sun-dried tomatoes and a handful of fresh baby spinach or arugula.
- Smoked Salmon Elegance: For special occasions, replace the ham with slices of smoked salmon, and mix fresh, finely chopped dill and a few drops of lemon juice into the cream cheese.
- Cheese Play: The grated cheese mixed into the batter can be a mild cheese like Trappist or Gouda for a creamier taste, but if you prefer a bolder flavor, add a bit of aged cheddar or Parmesan.
- Lighter, Low-Fat Version: If you’re following a stricter diet and aiming for a perfect fit dinner, substitute the cream cheese with low-fat cottage cheese or plain cream cheese, seasoned with chives and salt.
- Herb Seasoning: Feel free to sprinkle a pinch of dried oregano, thyme, or fresh parsley into the grated carrot mixture, which will give a wonderful aroma while baking.
Reheating and store the carrot omelet roll:
Storage
Wrap the rolled-up roll tightly in cling film or baking paper, and place it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This way, it will stay fresh and juicy for 2-3 days. It makes an excellent cold pack for work or travel, as it can be sliced more easily and neatly when cold. We do not recommend freezing it due to the high water content of fresh tomatoes and cream cheese.
Reheating
- Best Served Cold: This dish is particularly delicious when served cold or at room temperature, like a classic cold platter.
- In a Pan or Oven: If you prefer it warm, you can gently reheat the sliced pieces in a dry pan over low heat for 1-2 minutes, or warm them in a 150°C oven for 4-5 minutes. Avoid using a microwave, as the cream cheese can easily melt out.
Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
- Dough Sticking to Baking Paper: The high sugar content in carrots and cheese can easily cause sticking. Always use high-quality silicone baking paper, and if you want to be extra sure, lightly brush it with a few drops of oil before spreading the mixture on it.
- Cracking When Rolling: If you bake it too long and it dries out, the dough will lose its elasticity. Keep an eye on the oven: as soon as it turns golden brown and the surface feels firm (about 15 minutes), take it out. It’s best to loosen it from the paper while still warm or slightly warm.
- Base Remaining Too Wet: If the grated carrot is very juicy, it’s advisable to gently squeeze out the excess moisture by hand before mixing, otherwise, the dough will remain too soft and may not bake through properly.
- Cream Oozing Out When Spreading: Always wait until the baked carrot base has cooled to at least lukewarm before spreading the cream cheese. If you spread it on hot dough, the fat will immediately melt and soak the roll.

- Ingredients for 1 Roll (4 Servings):
Directions
Preheat the oven to 180°C (top and bottom heat), and line a medium-sized baking tray with high-quality baking paper.
Peel the carrots, then grate them on the smaller or medium holes of a hand grater into a large mixing bowl.
Crack the 3 whole eggs into the carrots, sprinkle with salt, freshly ground black pepper, and add the grated cheese.
Using a wooden spoon or spatula, mix the batter thoroughly so that the eggs and cheese evenly coat all the grated carrots.
Pour the mixture into the prepared baking tray, then use a spatula to spread it evenly into a rectangular shape about half a centimeter thick.
Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake at 180°C for exactly 15 minutes, until the surface is nicely golden brown and feels firm to the touch.
Remove the tray from the oven and let the sheet cool for 5-10 minutes until it becomes lukewarm but still retains its flexibility.
Evenly spread the cream cheese over the surface, lay the thinly sliced ham on top, and then distribute the thin tomato slices over it.
Using the baking paper, roll it up tightly from one of the shorter or longer sides, forming a classic savory roll. This versatile carrot omelet roll can be served warm or, after resting for a few minutes, sliced into 4 equal pieces with a sharp knife.
