Cherry Poppy Seed Strudel: A Super Juicy Classic Recipe with Store-Bought Dough

If you’re craving a truly traditional yet incredibly simple dessert, this cherry poppy seed strudel will become your new favorite treat. The tart cherries and sweet, aromatic poppy seeds create a classic pairing that guarantees heavenly flavors, while the creamy sour cream and honey ensure unparalleled juiciness. This cherry poppy seed strudel recipe not only comes together quickly using store-bought strudel dough, but it’s also a perfect alternative if you want to bring the charm of a real homemade strudel to your table. Make this crispy, fruity wonder, which is essentially a homemade juicy poppy seed strudel!

Variations and Chef Tips

This cherry poppy seed strudel is an incredibly versatile base recipe that you can confidently adapt according to your taste and pantry contents:

  • Extra Citrus Version: Along with the grated lemon zest, add a bit of freshly squeezed lemon juice or grated orange zest to the poppy seed filling. This juicy poppy seed strudel will have an even more refreshing flavor.
  • Apple-Poppy Twist: Instead of some of the cherries, use grated, squeezed apples in the filling; the fruity flavors complement each other brilliantly.
  • Nut Crumb Base: Instead of semolina, you can use finely ground roasted walnuts or cookie crumbs to sprinkle on the dough, adding an extra crunchy texture to the pastry.
  • Chef Tip for Perfect Texture: When layering the drained cherries on the poppy seeds, distribute them evenly. If the filling is uniformly thick everywhere, each slice of the cherry poppy seed strudel will remain equally juicy.

Storage and Consumption

Storage

Since this freshly baked cherry poppy seed strudel retains its texture well at room temperature, it will stay perfectly fresh for 2-3 days when covered or stored in a food container. If you plan to keep it longer, you can slice the cooled strudel and store it in the freezer.

Consumption / Reheating

  • Reheating: If you want to make the pastry crispy again, place the slices in a preheated oven at 160 °C for about 3-5 minutes. Avoid using the microwave, as it may make the pastry soggy!
  • The Perfect Strudel Texture: Before serving, wait until the warm cherry poppy seed strudel cools to lukewarm. During this time, the filling will firm up just enough to be perfectly sliceable while keeping the pastry crispy. This is the best method if you want to enjoy the maximum pleasure from a simple cherry strudel.

Common Mistakes

Most Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Too Watery, Soggy Dough: If you don’t thoroughly drain the cherry filling, the excess juice will soak the strudel sheets. Always drain the fruit well and use semolina to absorb moisture!
  • Dry, Clumpy Poppy Filling: If you skip the sour cream or the buttering between the sheets, the poppy seeds will remain dry. The dollops of sour cream melt during baking and make the filling perfectly juicy.
  • Cracked, Leaky Strudel: If you roll the sheets too tightly or forget to tuck in the edges of the dough, the filling may leak out. Always tuck in the sides before rolling!

  • Ingredients for 2 rolls of cherry poppy seed strudel (about 8 servings)

Directions

Step1

Prepare a clean kitchen towel and a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Place the cherries in a strainer and thoroughly press out the excess juice. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.

Step2

In a bowl, measure the ground poppy seeds, add the powdered sugar, vanilla sugar, and grated lemon zest. Mix the dry ingredients thoroughly with a spoon until well combined.

Step3

Lay out the first sheet of strudel dough on the kitchen towel, brush it lightly with melted butter, then place the next sheet on top. Brush this one with butter as well, and repeat the process until you have 3-4 sheets stacked on top of each other.

Step4

Sprinkle the top buttered sheet evenly with semolina, then distribute half of the sugary poppy mixture on it, leaving a 2-3 cm strip around the edges.

Step5

Dollop half of the sour cream in small dots on the poppy seeds, then pile half of the drained cherries on top, drizzle with honey, and sprinkle with a bit of cinnamon.

Step6

Fold in the two shorter edges of the dough about 2 cm, then carefully roll the strudel into a tight log using the kitchen towel. Repeat the steps with the second roll.

Step7

Transfer the rolls to the baking tray with the seam side down. Brush the tops generously with melted butter, then place in the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
